Constitutional Court Examines South Koreas Treatment of Conscientious Objectors

On July 9, 2015, South Korea’s Constitutional Court held a public hearing on the constitutional complaint of three conscientious objectors to military service. What reasoning might move the Court to recognize the right to conscientious objection—and possibly lead South Korea to adopt alternative civilian service? This video summarizes the hearing and the issues confronting the Court. The Court adjourned the hearing, and will deliberate on the constitutionality of laws that punish conscientious objectors.
