When incarcerated killer Dr Abel Gideon murders a night nurse at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, administrator Dr Frederick Chilton believes he is the much wanted Chesapeake Ripper due to the similar style. Gideon's sudden willingness to take credit is suspicious. It also stirs up Crawford's memories of Miriam Lass, the young FBI trainee he sicced on the case, but who disappeared just before the Ripper went dormant.
