Jonathan acquires the essence of madness, which lets him perceive the Gentleman when he calls him up. He follows the fairy into the magical lands and his world is shaken by what he finds out. Norrell destroys all copies of Jonathan’s book and manages to undermine magic’s respectability in the process.
