At first glance it's undeserving of a second look. Except it's not sand. It's actually a mountain of money; a stash of in-demand heavy metal minerals that's worth more than a billion dollars. Australia has an abundance of these so-called "rare earth" minerals but until very recently we didn't care. China, though, has long known how valuable this resource is and has been buying it up and processing it to make defence weaponry.
